Located on the eastern shore of Lake Koocanusa, the rural unincorporated community of Baynes Lake sits just north of the Elk River’s mouth in southeastern British Columbia’s East Kootenay region. The small community of Jaffray is also near Lake Koocanusa, north of the U.S./Canada border, northwest of the Elko junction, along Highway 3/93. Baynes Lake is also off Highway 93, about forty-four kilometers from Fernie and sixty-five kilometers southeast of Cranbrook. Similarly, Jaffray is roughly forty-eight kilometers southwest of Fernie and fifty-three kilometers southeast of Cranbrook.
Baynes Lake and Jaffray are part of the area known as “South Country,” which also includes the communities of Grasmere, Galloway, Newgate, Wardner, and Elko.
